Reading the Water: Primary and Secondary Foam Lines

In this lesson Matt discuss recognizing primary and secondary foam lines.

We know it’s difficult to see the fish in the video, but as I describe there are fish holding in both the primary foam line under Dave’s rod tip and the secondary foam line closest to me.

This primary line has the most amount of current and not surprisingly is holding the most bugs. Again, not surprisingly holding the most fish also.

The secondary foam line closest to me holds less bugs, less fish, but should NOT be overlooked!

Long story short, fish all the foam lines, not just the part you think will hold the most fish.

Pro tip-

Dave demonstrated a perfect hook set in this video and maintained “max” pressure nearly the entire fight.

One thing he should change next time his to continuously pull the rod towards the fish’s tail. If you look closely his rod was pulling pressure away from the fishes head/mouth when he spit the hook.
